The Cytogenetic Senior Technologist will aid the supervisor and managers in the coordination and management of workflow. Facilitates high quality Cytogenetics and/or FISH testing and reporting within established time frames. Performs all routine and special cytogenetics and/or FISH practices as needed. Microscope work performed as required. Involved in training technicians and new employees.

The work schedule for this position will be Monday-Friday 9:00 am - 5:30 pm.

Job Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Routine Procedures will include:
  1. Performing Tissue culture procedures

  2. Harvesting slides and Slide making and Slide banding

  3. Automated karyotyping procedures

  4. Reagent preparation

  5. FISH processing

  6. FISH probing

  7. FISH scoping

  • Determine the acceptability of specimens for testing according to established criteria

  • Perform routine and complex technical procedures and functions according to departmental Standard Operating Procedures

  • Monitor, operate and troubleshoot instrumentation to ensure proper functionality

  • Demonstrate the ability to make technical decisions regarding testing and problem solving.

  • Prepare, test and evaluate new reagents or controls

  • Report accurate and timely test results in order to deliver quality patient care

  • Perform and document preventive maintenance and quality control procedures

  • Identify and replenish testing bench supplies as necessary

  • Assist with processing of specimens when needed

  • Maintain a safe work environment and wear appropriate personal protective equipment


  • Bachelors degree in a biological science

  • Must be a Cytogenetic Technologist with a minimum of five years' experience

  • ASCP certified (grandfathering clause if hired by NY lab prior to 2000)

  • Evaluation of required skills by Supervisor

  • Good communication skills
