Laboratory Corporation of America Clinical Laboratory Operations Manager - Genomics & Next Generation Sequencing in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina

The Genomics Operations Manager will oversee the operations and administration of NGS and other testing within a clinical diagnostic laboratory environment. This position will have ownership over all Genomic operational processes, personnel and administrative functions for IG-RTP. Reporting to the Director of Operations, the Genomics Operations Manager will work closely with the IG senior leadership team as well as R&D and other labs running NGS assays.


  • Direct the technical operations of the Genomics lab, including accurate delivery of patient results, competency, continuing education and positive morale of laboratory staff

  • Support Business Development and strategic planning for new analytical technologies, especially NGS testing

  • Ensure processes and services are monitored for quality, cost effectiveness, and efficiency through continuous process and quality improvement.

  • Manage staff including recruiting & hiring qualified and enthusiastic employees, performance management, training and development

  • Directly supervise, train, and mentor laboratory supervisors and have ownership and responsibility for all Genomics lab personnel

  • Oversee lab operations and attend staff and management meetings

  • Guide the LIMs and Assay Development team

  • Be responsible for laboratory performance criteria including:

  • Delivering patient laboratory results within specified TAT

  • Monitoring and ensuring acceptable repeat and failure rates

  • Achieving pre-determined assay reagent and supply costs and maintain updated costs

  • Assuring productivity levels in the labs are achieved and maintained

  • Determine efficient workflow, capacities and staffing needs / oversight as well as troubleshooting problems as necessary

  • Work closely and cooperatively with the clinical directors as well as develop a close relationship with R&D in partnering to bring on new NGS assays and/or improve existing assays



  • B.S. in Biology, Chemistry or related areas, Master's degree in Science preferred

  • Minimum of 7 years related experience in a clinical laboratory

  • 3+ years of experience managing clinical laboratory operations

  • 3+ years' experience with Next Generation Sequencing assays; including developing, launching and performance oversight

  • Thorough knowledge of compliance requirements is required (i.e. CLIA, CAP, CA, NY state) and experience with inspections of such agencies

  • This position requires an individual who is a motivational and authentic leader who can "get results through trusting relationships"

  • Strong leadership skill set. Ability to create, then lead teams to take ownership of projects from their design to timelines to implementation

  • Ability to clearly and effectively communicate to all levels of employees, including direct reports, peers, and executives
